At the age of 41, and having never backpacked more than thirty miles in her life, Nancy Shepherd set off to hike the 2,168 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Along the way she grew from an inexperienced hiker into a confident long-distance backpacker, a status earned through mental, as well as physical, struggles. Lessons learned on the trail helped form her new self and gave her the strength to go beyond the perceived “rules” of the trail and end her hike on her own terms.

"This book is a must-read for anyone who is planning an Appalachian Trail thru-hike; who has ever thought about hiking the Appalachian Trail; who has previously hiked the AT; or who enjoys reading about others who have hiked the AT."

"Ms. Shepherd's account is riveting in its descriptions of the places she sees and the adventures she has, and I felt like I was right there with her, cheering her on. In reading her words, I felt her grow as a person along with her growing as a hiker, and I wished I could have been there with her at the very top of Katahdin at the end of her amazing journey."

My Own Hike A Woman Journey On The Appalachian Trail eBook Nancy Shepherd

I often think that this would be a great adventure, and goal for the future. Reading people's stories are always inspiring to soul search , endure and build confidence in one's self. I think as you learn your comfort zones and limitations that blue blazing is acceptable. Again in the end it is the journey your own journey that is important. You will have bad days and good days, so hearing both, whether taken as whining or negative, are all part of that journey, so hardships in this reading are not glossed over to show all the cheer of the trail which I liked. And maybe if others read this they will know how important etiquette and kindness still play a part even on the trail. People need to be kind and thoughtful. People who Don't like this book probably have some personal issues, personal preferences. The AT would be a great adventure whether blue blazing or white blazing maybe do both. Seems as though those white blazes move from time to time anyway, to make the trail safer or more interesting. I would go for more interesting. Georgia to Maine on the " The Appalachian Trail" is a ThruHike. I will not judge anyone for how they made "Their Journey".

Nice book, very nice journey.

My Own Hike A Woman Journey On The Appalachian Trail eBook Nancy Shepherd Reviews

I enjoyed reading a journal style book about a woman's hike. As a female getting ready to do a long hike its refreshing to read a story that is minus fluff and isn't about drinking and getting high. I had pretty much ruled out the AT for those reasons. Maybe Ill reconsider.
I was excited to find a book written by a female thru hiker but I was disappointed. Throughout the book she complained and whined about the pain, being tired and difficulty of the trail at times. There was a slightly less whining at the end of the book. I defiantly preferred the book Becoming Odyssa for the female perspective on doing a thru hike on the AT.
A nice little read with some good insights. One has to wonder why, with so much foot trouble, she stuck to the same maker of boots (when she wore them), but on the whole you are able to get a good feel as to the level of effort and commitment necessary to thru hike the AT. It's a good addition to my self of AT related books.
I've read a few AT books. Most of them written by men. As a man I thought it would be interesting to get a woman's point of view. It was interesting but I did note a whiney note that is for the most part absent from the men's accounts. Hey, the AT is tough I suppose anyone would complain a little. I don't hold that against the Shepard of the Hills but it stood out in my mind.
Enjoyed reading this book with what I consider a very real view of the author's Appalachian Trail adventure. She did not gloss over or minimize the difficult parts of the trail, and I believe it was a very real account of her journey and her mental state during the journey. Those who have hiked the trail know that at times it IS discouraging, but has very real rewards as well.

As a section hiker who someday hopes to thru hike, this book gave me much to think about.
The first half of the book seemed to be just a lot of complaining about aches and pains. I wanted to offer her a bottle of Advil. The second half was a more enjoyable read. My husband and I have aspirations of hiking the trail. After reading this book we may find another hiking trail. The way she describes it is a 2000 mile rock climb. I have not gotten that impression from other trail books I have read.
I have read several AT books. My first written by a female. This one was probably the most depressing. It seemed there was never a day that was "just right". It was a bit like Goldilocks - it was either too hot or too cold or too hilly or too rocky. Maybe that is trail life? I just didn't see as much joy in this book. But the author says many times she didn't enjoy herself. In fact she tried to bend the trail to make it something she would enjoy - taking blue blazes, cutting out hard sections, camping in undesignated camping areas, etc. That part was interesting to read. I love reading about the AT. I hope to one day travel it. Thank you for sharing your story!
